August Update

Speaking at MS Independent Automobile Dealers Association

Earlier in August, I attended and spoke at the Mississippi Independent Automobile Dealers Association (MIADA) annual conference in Biloxi. I had the opportunity to give them an update of what’s been going on in the Legislature the past year and give some insight into what we’ll be dealing with in the upcoming session.

During the session earlier this year, I worked closely with MIADA on a finance bill. It was a reminder of how when done right, our legislative process works to ensure that different voices have a seat at the table and can bring perspectives that make legislation better. I appreciate the group for their work at the Capitol and for giving me the opportunity to speak with them at their conference.

Visiting with U.S. Senators Hyde-Smith and Blackburn

Senators Cindy Hyde-Smith and Marsha Blackburn hosted an event for President Trump’s reelection effort at the Wayne-Sanderson Farms conference center in Laurel last month. Senator Blackburn, one of Tennessee’s U.S. Senators, was born in Laurel and lived there until she went to college. I had a wonderful time speaking with her and Senator Hyde-Smith, both of whom are doing a great job representing Mississippi and Tennessee in Washington.

PERS in the News

Mississippi’s Public Employee Retirement System, PERS, has been back in the news lately. A recent PEER report reiterates what we’ve been told for a while now: the system faces a massive unfunded liability problem, and simply hiring more government employees isn’t going to fix it.

As you know, I have been closely following the growing issues facing PERS for years. Working on finding ways to shore up the system and ensure its solvency is one of my highest priorities. We’re now just a few short months away from the 2025 Legislative Session, and I anticipate PERS will be one of the bigger topics to be addressed.

I’ve said this many times, but I want to be clear – my priority is to protect the benefits of current PERS beneficiaries AND the taxpayers of Mississippi. I am committed to finding solutions that will ensure those who spent their careers in service to our state and communities receive the benefits that they were promised while not adding new tax burdens to Mississippians. I look forward to working with my colleagues in the Legislature to get that done.

I want to hear from you!

If there's an upcoming event you'd like me to attend, or if you have any thoughts about the most recent or upcoming session, please let me know! For general thoughts or questions, you can email my senate email: chjohnson@senate.ms.gov. For anything involving the new Government Structure committee, you can email msgovernmentstructure@gmail.com. I would love to talk with you about issues that directly affect you, and emailing me is the best way I can do that.
