August Legislative Update

Legislative Update

Every two years, the National Federation of Independent Businesses (NFIB) releases scores for Mississippi’s state representatives and senators. Every legislator is scored based on his or her voting record on top bills that impact the small business community.

I am proud to say that the NFIB awarded me a perfect score of 100 percent. One of my top priorities as your state Senator is to pass legislation that helps create an environment where small businesses can grow and thrive.

For instance, I supported SB 3049, the Mississippi Back to Business Liability Act, which protects business owners from frivolous lawsuits. I believe in offering legal protections to the men and women who take the risk of starting their own venture and help grow our economy.

I also voted for SB 2825, which raised the weight limit for harvest permits. While it may not have made headlines, this bill was important in bringing Mississippi’s regulations in line with neighboring states, which helps us compete in the national and global economy.

ALEC Meetings

I recently had the opportunity to attend a conference with ALEC, the American Legislative Exchange Council. ALEC is an organization dedicated to the principles of limited government and free markets, two things in which I believe strongly.

At the conference, I had the pleasure of speaking with Art Laffer and Stephen Moore (see photo below). These gentlemen are two of the top economists in the world, having advised multiple Presidents and other high-ranking officials over the past several decades. I was thankful for the chance to talk with them about our shared beliefs in lower taxes, limited government, and economic freedom.

Laffer served in the Reagan administration and played a major role in the President’s successful efforts to cut taxes. Moore was a leading economic advisor to President Trump in the early days of the administration and was instrumental in the passage of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act.

These men dedicated their lives to improving America’s economy and increasing prosperity for everyone. My goal as your Senator is to support legislation that will grow our economy, raise average wages, and increase opportunity for all Mississippians. I thank you for your continued support, and encourage you to reach out to me with any questions or comments that you may have.
